RFID with EPC

What does EPC mean?

EPC is an abbreviation and stands for "Electronic Product Code". This is a number code for RFID tags that is standardized by EAN International and UCC (Uniform Code Council) for the unique identification of goods in the supply chain. It is a unique number that is assigned to each good and that the RFID label (specifically the chip in the transponder) contains. The EPC can then provide information about the goods' data such as serial number, production date and similar information. These then only need to be registered in a database.

What kind of EPC is there?

These so-called electronic product codes can be of different lengths. The length in turn depends on the area of application, e.g. merchandise, containers or similar.

The EPC normally consists of the following components:

  • Header
  • Filter (sorting function)
  • Unique company identification (Company Prefix)
  • Object identifier and serial number (called Item Reference - often the article number of the goods)
